Samba

Even Chance does not operate on a first-come, first-serve basis. In most cases, we have already decided on the type of home and owner we want for our dogs. These opinions are based on the temperament tests we perform before accepting the dog into our program and the behaviors the dogs display as they spend time in our homes. Our agency reserves the right to deny acceptance of any dog to an owner who we feel the lifestyle does not match that of the dog. We are in no way judging you or your lifestyle; we simply want to put our dogs in the best living situation possible. We take the decisions we make when it comes to placing one of our dogs in a forever home very seriously. If I sound like the perfect pit bull for you and your family, and you are interested in giving me a forever home, do not hesitate! Please fill out an application at www.evenchance.org/adopt, and my foster family will contact you to schedule an in-person meet and greet. We look forward to meeting any and all interested applicants.

  1. What is your name?
Samba. Like the shoe. Yes, I’m that cool.
  2. How old are you?
I am 2 years old. Which means I am young, athletic, and occasionally make questionable choices.
  3. What do you look like?
I’m an extremely handsome black pit bull who resembles a fruit bat (in a good way). I’ve got a lean, strong, sporty build—my foster mom says I have “nice conformation,” which I assume means I should be in magazines. My coat is short, jet black, super shiny, with little flashes of white—just like the Adidas Samba. Coincidence? I think not.
  4. What do you like to eat?
    Yes.
But seriously—food is LIFE. Treats, meals, crumbs, accidental drops… if food is involved, I am motivated, focused, and willing to negotiate.
  5. What kind of personality do you have?
I’m equal parts goofy and snuggly. My foster mom says I’m “naughty,” but I prefer the term curious investigator. I like to explore things she says are off-limits. I usually still try—but when she calls my name, I sprint over, sit politely, and deploy my most innocent face. It works.
I love rolling around, flopping on my back, bringing you toys (and random objects), training for treats, playing ball or frisbee, going for walks, running… and then immediately switching to full couch-lap cuddle mode.
  6. Describe your perfect day.
Whatever my people are doing. Hanging out? I’m in. Being active? Let’s go. Walks, hikes, adventures, naps—I’m extremely flexible.
  7. What is your favorite toy?
    All of them.
I especially enjoy carrying a toy to my person on the couch and gently pressing it toward their mouth. I put toys in my mouth, so obviously that’s how everyone plays.
  8. Do you know any tricks?
I’m learning! I walk nicely on leash (after a reminder). I’m very proud of my “climb”—I go to a bed or spot, stay there no matter what (even if food hits the floor), and wait until I hear “free.” I have a solid sit (working on not popping up like popcorn), kind of understand “down,” and I definitely know “go potty” and “kennel.”
  9. What scares you?
I used to be scared of almost everything indoors—noises, movement, stairs (what are those?). My foster mom thinks I lived tied outside before the shelter. She taught me how houses work, and now I’m brave, curious, and way more confident. Very little makes me pancake anymore.
  10. Do you like cats and dogs?
I’ve done great with the dogs I’ve met. Sometimes I bring a lot of enthusiasm, but when another dog sets boundaries, I listen. I’ve never met a cat, so TBD—but squirrels and bunnies outside are extremely exciting to chase.
  11. If you could be anywhere in the world, where would it be?
Wherever the people are. Preferably with snacks.
  12. How is your health?
I’m on the upswing! When I arrived at the shelter, I had sores, infections, no fur, fly-struck ears, parasites, and UTIs. Not my best era. My coat is now perfect, my stomach feels great, and we’re still working on my ears—but I feel so much better.
  13. How long have you lived in your foster home?
Since Even Chance rescued me in August.
  14. Who do you live with and who’s your closest companion?
I live with a mom, dad, a teenage boy, and a teenage girl. There are lots of dogs too—some are a little snobby—but my best friend is Brick. We came from the same shelter and are basically inseparable.
  15. Where do you hang out when you’re home alone?
My crate. I’m crate trained and very responsible.
  16. Where do you sleep?
Also my crate. I like structure.
  17. What was life like before Even Chance rescued you?
I don’t remember much, except that I was neglected—and that animal control finding me was a good thing. An even better thing was my foster mom seeing me in my kennel and deciding I was the one. She was right.
